Johnston, 1766. 18 volumes in uniform full leather bindings, octavo, contemporary signature, "Sir Robert Swift", to f.f.e.p., previous owner's contemporary inscription, "J. Ramsden, 1784" to upper title page of each volume with later inscription, "George Ramsden 1837" to first voume. The previous owner's book-plate has been removed from most volumes but still present in volumes VI, XII, XIII, XIV anc XVI, b&w fronts, "Tale of a Tub" to first volume, complete with 8 copper-plate engravings, Volume II with "Voyage to Lilliput", complete with 5 copper-plate engraved maps, some light foxing and tanning to most volumes. Restored by Cottage Bindery in gilt decorated spines with red and green leather spine labels and gilt volume numbers on black circular leather, retaining the early original marbled eps and leather sides . A very fine set of this early work.

Beautifully bound uniform 18 volume set which includes 12 volumes of 'The Works of Jonathan Swift' (complete), together with, the 'Letters' (also complete, 6 volumes). The first volume with the ownership signature of 'Sir Robert Swift' (possibly related ?). The volumes all published in 1766, includes his famous work "Gulliver's Travels". Swift was well aware of the Dutch discoveries and those of William Dampier. Lilliput and Houyhnhnms Land were mapped by Swift south of Java and next to the actual Dutch discoveries in Australia. Volume 2 has Swift's engraved map of "Lilliput" showing Sunda Straits and to the south, "Diemens Land" is marked on this map with two sailing ships. Item #98085
