The successful surgeon who commanded high fees for his services; and the compulsive collector whose bottled preparations, dried specimens, and Earls Court menagerie, though ridiculed by many of his colleagues, attracted foreign naturalists on their visits to London. Through it he had become a friend of and consultant to both Sir Joseph Banks and Captain James Cook on their return with their treasures in 1771 from their long exploratory trip in the south Pacific. Hunter subsequently served future expeditions as an adviser on what to collect, how to collect, preserve, and analyse the more remarkable natural history specimens acquired. [Oxford]. Item #95380
