Bennett (1804-1893) is considered "'the greatest of the physician-naturalists of Australia'" (ADB). He was a leading figure in the early days of the Australian Museum, a fellow of the Linnean Society of London and a corresponding member of the Zoological Society. "Gatherings of a Naturalist" is a major work with important early illustrations of Australian fauna and flora, including the "Australian Boabab Tree" (Andansonia Gregorii} by Thomas Baines sketched on Gregory's North Australian expedition.
