A Letter to Philip Francis, Esq., from the Right Hon. Edmund Burke, Charman [. . . ] Members of the Committee for managing the Impeachment of Mr. [Warren] Hastings, with Remarks. (2nd Edition, 1788)

London: John Stockdale, 1788. 2nd ed., 8vo, original wraps, pp 33, (iv). Inscription top corner (price in rupees), water stained bottom edge, hand stitched, edge darkened and worn, good condition only

Scarce pamphlet concerning the impeachment of Warren Hastings (1732-1818), formerly the Governor-General of Bengal. Hastings was accused of corruption and misconduct, and the prosecution was led by Edmund Burke. Sir Philip Francis was an antagonist of Hastings and had been wounded by him in a duel. The pamphlet reprints the Letter, but most of the text consists of the Remarks, criticising Francis and defending Hastings. The trial started in 1788 and lasted seven years: in 1795 Hastings was overwhelmingly acquitted. Item #92259
