The author was surgeon and zoologist on Robert Falcon Scott's Terra Nova Expedition. He was part of the Northern Party which was forced to overwinter on Inexpressible Island. The first publication of his diary, from the original manuscript, with the author's own photographs and sketches. (Levick was later known for the first published study of the Adelie penguin).
