Octavo, full leather binding with blindstamped decoration, spine lettered in gilt with raised bands and blindstamped decoration, all edges gilt, vignette of Bible with multiple languages surrounding it to title page, map vignette with inset plan of the Temple to New Testament page, pp 585, i, 188. N.d. (1839?). Very small bookseller ticket of the original Bath bookseller. Nineteenth-century gift inscriptions endpaper. Pressed leaf loosely inserted in Leviticus. Vertical tear to top edge of title page, and chips to the edges same page, rubbing to edges of spine with some loss. Number annotations top corner approx. first 250 pages, sums in pencils (counting bible verses) in New Testament. Very good condition.

An early printing of Samuel Bagster's pioneering polyglot Bible, first published in 1819. (A polyglot is a book that contains side-by-side versions of the same text in several different languages.). Bagster published a Bible with 60,000 parallel references. The title in this edition continues: "the matter of each page agreeing with two editions of the Hebrew scriptures, and also with the Greek, the Latin, the French, the German, the Italian, the Spanish and the Portuguese version". The references are in a vertical column of text on each page alongside the text, each denoted with a letter. An interesting edition. Item #106824
