Original map printed in 1862 shows coastal North-West Western Australia from Cape Cuvier to Solitary Island. Details of Gregory's inland route including dates and topographical and ecological comments. An important expedition in which river systems of the Nickol Bay region were noted by Gregory's party. Published for the Journal of the Royal Geographical Society. Francis Thomas Gregory (1821-1888) was an Australian explorer who explored the interior of Western Australia around Nicol Bay (Nickol Bay) in 1861. During the expedition, Gregory reported on land suitable for grazing as well as the possiblilty of a pearling industry being established. He was one of the first Europeans to note the presence of iron ore in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Item #106535
