The complete set of the first revised edition ("nouvelle edition, revuue et corrigee, ou l'on a mis les remarques sous le texte" - title page) of Madame Dacier's translation of the Iliad into French. Her translation includes an extensive preface, a chapter on the life of Homer, and her comprehensive notes on the text (as footnotes in every page). The volumes are illustrated with scenes from the Iliad (in a very neo-classical style). Anne Le Fevre Dacier (c. 1651 – 17 August 1720), better known during her lifetime as Madame Dacier, was a renowned French scholar, translator, commentator and editor of the classics. "A distinguished classicist during the reign of the French king Louis XIV, Madame Dacier achieved renown for her translation of Greek and Latin texts into French. Her translation of Homer’s Iliad (1699) and Odyssey (1708) remains a monument of neoclassical French prose [...] Her translation of the Iliad in 1699 established her as a master of neoclassical French style as well as confirming her reputation as a preeminent classicist. Her preface to the Iliad, staunchly defending Homer and Hellenistic civilization, helped re-launch the 'querelle des anciens and des modernes'." (Encyclopedia of Philosophy.)
