Full leather binding with gilt-stamped decorative border upper and lower boards, gilt decorated panels and gilt-stamped title label spine, marbled endpapers, pp vi, 346, some creasing to upper corners of pages pp.207-238. Leather of spine is rubbed, including loss of a decorated / lettered panel near centre of spine. Corners bumped and rubbed, head and foot of spine fragile. Inscribed initials first blank endpaper, gift inscription second blank endpaper (dated 1842). A very nice tree calf binding with contemporary hand made marbled endpapers in very good condition.
Christoph Christian Sturm (1740 - 1786) was a German preacher and author: "Reflections on the Works of God in Nature" is his best-known work. (Beethoven owned a copy, which he annotated heavily.) This translation was first published in 1788: this is the second edition. The work is divided into religious and philosophical thoughts for contemplation for each day of the calendar year. This last voume begins on September 1 and ends on December 31. Item #106095
