An iconic guide to an iconic vehicle. John Muir (1918 - 1977) was originally a structural engineer for a federal agency, but "dropped out" in the 1960s and set up a garage in New Mexico specialising in repairing Volkswagens. In 1969, Muir collaborated with the artist Peter Aschwanden (1942 - 2005) to create "How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive". The book became one of the most successful self-published books in history. (Afer Muir's death, additional new material and revisions were provided by Tosh Gregg.) The book is copiously illustrated with drawings in a very 1960s, counterculture, freewheeling style, but also with many useful diagrams. The subtitles on this particular edition specify: "The Beetle, Bus, Karmann Ghia, Safari, and 411 - 412. 1200, 1300, 1500, 1700, 1800 and 2000." A comprehensive resouce but also a time capsule of the 1960s, both in illustrations and in writing style. Item #106083
