The first two novels by Murakami, translated here into English outside Japan for the first time. They are the first two books in the "Trilogy of the Rat" series, the third being "A Wild Sheep Chase". The books were first published in Japanese in 1979 and 1980 and for a long time they were difficult to find even in Japan. This first US edition also includes an introduction by Murakami, "The Birth of My Kitchen-Table Fiction", in which he describes his life at the time and the writing of the novels.
