"Aurealis" is Australia's longest running small-press science-fiction and fantasy magazine. It was launched in September 1990 to provide a market for speculative fiction writers, with a particular emphasis on raising the profile of Australian authors. Thse twenty issues of "Aurealis" feature a wide range of short stories, feature articles, book reviews, book news, and more. The magazine also featured Australian illustrators, including the now acclaimed Western Australian artist Shaun Tan (b. 1974). In the following issues the illustrations would have been some of his earliest published work. In Issue 7, the "cover, interior graphics, and interior illustrations are by Shaun Tan". In issue 8 several of the b&w illustrations are signed "Tan '92". The cover art is unsigned, but it is in a similar style to his earlier covers for "Aurealis". In issue 9, there are two signed Tan illustrations, plus interior graphics. In issue 10, there are three signed Tan illustrations, plus interior graphics. In issue 11, there are three signed Tan illustrations, plus interior graphics. In issue 12, there are five signed Tan illustrations, plus interior graphics. In issue 13 the cover illustration is by Tan (a wonderful painting of armour-plated emu warriors in the desert, with an Aboriginal motif painted on their bodies), plus two signed Tan drawings and graphics. Issue 14 has three Tan illustrations. Issue 15 has four. Issue 16 has graphics, Issue 17 has a striking cover illustration by Tan. At this point the design and overall look of the magazine is changing, and the signed Shaun Tan cease around 1997, the year of publication of his first book. Overall this run of issues of "Aurealis" are an interesting, and uncommon, glimpse into the state of Australian science fiction and fantasy in the 1990s. Item #105880
