Clemens' Silent Teacher. Dissected map of the United States and of each state in counties [Complete Jigsaw map of the USA] c.1885

Clayville, New York: c. 1885. A children's jigsaw game designed to tech geography. Original illustrated box, complete with all jigsaw pieces, which are illustrated in colour on both sides (the states to one side and a large advertisement to the other). Printed on the inside of the lid is an advertisement for the "Object Lesson Publishing Company". N.d., c. 1885. The paper covering of the non-illustrated sides of the box is chipped, but the illustrated cover label on top and the pieces themselves are all in very good condition.Contemporary ownership inscription (Louise Duchert) in pencil to the bottom of the box. The original catalogue desciption of 'Henry Sotheran Limited, London' on letterhead loosely inserted.

A geography jigsaw puzzle, with the illustration to the box showing the world being divided up by (mostly European) men: to the far left side are a Asian man (in 'national' costume) and an African woman (unclothed). Towards the bottom of the illustration a map of the United States is shown. The game is circa 1885: it is certainly pre-1889 because it shows the Territory of Dakota rather than the two states (1889), and also shows Indian Territory rather than Oklahoma Territory (1890). An object lesson in the spread of colonialism. Item #105744
