Buffalo: The Courier Company, 1877. 1st thus, 'Author's Edition, revised, enlarged and newly illustrated edition', octavo, original cloth boards with gilt-stamped decoration and lettering to spine, blindstamped design to boards, b&w frontis portrait plate with tissue guard, b&w plates, pp. 772. Signed with compliments by P.T. Barnum to the front free endpaper: signature and date of July 29th 1879. A tear to the tip edge of the spine with small area of fraying to the fore-edge of this repair. A tear to the front board (edge of the bevelled blindstamped design) with some fraying. Gilt titled spine with small gilt portrait of Barnum is complete and bright. Corners bumped. Very good condition. Scarce thus.
A scarce signed edition. The autobiography of Phineas Taylor Barnum (1810 - 1891). Barnum was a showman, businessman, politician, author, publisher, and philanthropist, although he is certainly most remembered as a circus impresario, starting various variety shows and theatres and co-founding the famous Barnum and Bailey Circus. He was known as "The Greatest Showman", and also sometimes called "The Prince of Humbugs" (although he was contemptuous of those who accrued money through actual fraud, such as spiritualists). "Struggles and Triumphs" deals extensively with his celebrated shows. Item #105733
