London: R. Ackermann, 1824. 2 volumes bound as one, vols. III and IV of "Africa". 12mo (145 x 90 mm), cloth stamped boards with blind-stamped decoration to boards and gilt-stamped design to centre of upper board, all edges gilt, pp i, 168, i, 184. N.d. (1824?). Vol. II has 14 colour plates of which two are folding. Vol III has a colour frontis plate and six more colour plates of which two are folding. The first folding plate (Town and Plantation of the Fulahs) is slightly wider than the book itself and very worn to the edges and folds: repaired with archival tape to the rear. Inner hinges reinforced with binding cloth. Rubbing along the edges of the spine, rear corner bumped and rubbed. Very good condition.

From the "World in Miniature" series edited by Frederic Shoberl (1775 - 1853), originally published in parts, noted particularly for the hand-coloured plates. This "Africa" combined volume examines culture and practices in northern and western Africa, with illustrations of villages, crafts, tools, clothing etc. There is also a long first chapter (pp 1 - 92) in vol, IV on the slave trade, with a folding plate showing the layout of a slave ship.
