Report of the Committee appointed by the Commonwealth and Queensland governments on the Problem of the Crown-of-thorns starfish (Acanthaster planci). [Cover title: Report of the Committee on the problem of the Crown-of-thorns Starfish]
Canberra: Parliament House, 1971. Royal octavo, pp.45, original printed wraps, colour plate and two maps. Sunning to edges of wraps, Parliamentary authorisation stamp front wrap. Contents clean, very good condition.
Government report, commonly known as 'Walsh Report' and published here in 1971, examining the spread of the crown-of-thorns starfish on the Great Barrier Reef includes the map of Queensland showing the principal reefs of the coast. [The crown-of-thorns feeds on coral polyps, and can cause widespread destruction. The Committee's first conclusion, of 14, was that the starfish does not consitute a threat to the reef.] The colour photograph taken by R.G. Pearson on page 15 shows coral recently killed by the starfish. Item #105462
