London: Joyce Gold, 30th September 1814. Unknown artist. Original mezzotint portrait, hand-coloured, 90cm x 75cm (Flinders’ image) on sheet 23.5xm x 14.5cm. Printed below image, "Published 30th September, 1814 by Joyce Gold, Naval Chronicle Office, 103 Shoe Lane London". Bookplate of Geoffrey Ingleton to rear board of frame. Condition: Very light spotting and tanning to paper, otherwise, very good condition.
This portait of Captain Matthew Flinders (by an unknown artist) is based on a circa 1800 miniature on ivory held in the collection of the Mitchell Library (N.S.W. Australia). The hand-colured mezzotint engraving (offered here) was made by the Naval Chronicle very shortly after Flinders' death (19 July 1814) to accompany his obituary. From the private collection of a Western Australian collector of British Naval books who acquired the portrait at the Geoffrey Ingleton Auction (December 1991).
