Opium and Other Stories

Harmondsworth: Penguin, 1983. 1st UK edition, octavo, illustrated wraps, b&w illus, pp 206. Some creasing to covers, marking/darkening to upper rear cover. Pages toned, otherwise clean. Good condition.

Géza Csáth (1887 - 1919) was a Hungarian writer, physician, psychiatyist, and opium addict. In her introduction,. Angela Carter descibes the circumstances of his short life as "those of a child in the death throes of an empire", and his dark stories reflect his unhappy life. The illustrations are taken from Attila Sassy's volume Opium-almok (Opium Dreams), published in 1909, which are very Beardsley in style and were condemned as obscene at the time. This is the first UK edition of the first translation into English (published in the US as "The Magician's Garden and Other Stories"), and uncommon thus. Item #104594
