Edinburgh: Ballantyne and Co. for the Letter-Carriers of the General Post Office, 1838. 1st ed., octavo, rebound in cloth with paper title spine label, pp xvii, xiv, 344, (12). Thirty-third publication. *Includes* the large folding map, which has been restored and relaid on heavier card: the map has some loss along one of the folds (see photograph) but is otherwise generally in good condition. Traces of water damage to the page edges, especially in the first section. Light marks throughout, several ink marks to the outside edge of the text block. A chip to the top of one page has been repaired. Previous owner's signature front free endpaper. Newspaper clipping loosely inserted (probably related to Lindsay ownership signature). Several small marks next to Lindsays in directory. Uncommon, especially with the map. Good condition.

There are numerous advertisements for insurance companies, followed by miscellaneous advertisements including circulating libraries, canal boats, local hotels, and businesses including coal, snuff, tea, clothes for gentlemen and ladies, and artificial limbs. The directory overall is a treasure trove for researchers, local historians, genealogists, or anyone interested in life in the 1830s. Item #104559
