Walker, 1811. 16mo, contemporary full calf binding with blind stamped decorations boards, blindstamped decoration and raised bands spine with title ['Virgil'] in gilt, marbled endpapers, all edges marbled, engraved illustrated title page, engraved frontis plate with scene from the Aenid, second printed title page, pp xxxv, 464, iv. Backstrip restored: slightly chipped to corners, laid down over matching leather. Very occasional spotting / foxing mainly to title page and prelimins, in general clean, well bound, very good condition.
The Roman poet Virgil [Publius Vergilius Maro, 70 - 19 BC] translated by the English poet John Dryden [1631-1700], in a much admired translation, complete in one volume. The volume includes: the biographical essay "The Life of Publius Vergilius Maro", by William Walsh; the 'Pastoral' poems (now more generally known as the Eclogues or the Bucolics); the Georgics; and the Aeneid. The Aeneid tells the legendary story of Aeneas, a Trojan who fled the fall of Troy and founded Rome. Virgil's Aeneid has been considered the national epic of ancient Rome since its compostion.
