Red full leather bindings with gilt decoration and title, raised bands, marbled endpapers, ribbon marker, all edges gilt, author portrait frontis plate to each volume, index, pp xliii, 586; vii, 603. Privately printed for members of the Classics of Surgery Library. Originally published as a memorial in 1924. William Stewart Halsted (1852 - 1922) was considered the most brilliant surgeon of his day, and introduced several new operations and techniques. He was one of the "Big Four" founding professors at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. (The painting of him at the beginning of vol. I is taken from John Singer Sargent's portrait "The Four Doctors", commissioned as a portrait of the four leading physicians at the faculty.). Item #103780
