Illustrated stories and essays about life in India, by a variety of authors. With a section on William Carey. (William Carey (1761 - 1834) was an English Christian missionary, Particular Baptist minister, translator, social reformer and cultural anthropologist who founded the Serampore University in India. He spent 41 years in India, and translated the Bible into Bengali, Punjabi, Oriya, Assamese, Marathi, Hindi and Sanskrit.) This collection is published by the press named after him, and often brings in a religious theme: for example, a description of a Hindu game of Snakes and Ladders (with a full-page illustration) stresses the theme of salvation. Other sections describe animals, Indian cities and buildings, Hindu gods and Indian 'churches', and children at play. Item #103554
