Thomas Stackhouse's account of the life and politics of Francis Atterbury (1663 - 1732). The author considers Attenbury as a scholar, a preacher, his private character and his public character: the last reporting his trial and strongly condemning his "conspiracy" (i.e. corresponding with the born-in- exile James Stuart, the claimant King, and his part in what was called the 'Atterbury plot', aimed at the restoration of the House of Stuart to the throne of Great Britain.) The plot collapsed, but Atterbury was sent to the Tower of London and then banished to France. Thomas Stackhouse (1677- 1752) was an English theologian and controversialist. The book is dedicated to the Whig politician William Pulteney, praising his work in condemning Atterbury, and signed Philalethes. Stackhouse's overall tone is fiercely anti-Jacobite (and anti- Catholic). Item #103407
