Condensed account of the life, work, and travels of Alexander von Humboldt (1769 - 1859), the German polymath, geographer, naturalist, explorer, and proponent of Romantic philosophy and science. "With the name of Humboldt we associate all that is interesting in the physical sciences." (Macgillivray, Introduction, p. 17.)
