Previous owner has covered the guide with clear plastic hence mottling to covers, some foxing to title page and along edges but generally in clean condition. Rubbed areas to staples and corners. Undated but c.1891 (based on page 58 which is headed "Chronicle of Principal Events that occured in Albany during the year 1890"). Scarce.
Scarce guide to Albany, Western Australia. Details include: a history of the town since first settlement, the harbour, a description of the town (including the streets and the most prominent buildings) and surrounding features, a business directory, a company directory, societies and clubs, municipal information including councillors, local members, district boards etc., the quarantine station, pastimes include sport, racing and theatre, developing industries, post and telegraph information, the railway (including stations and fares), steamer ships, land regulations (including the terms of pastoral leases), agriculture, mineral resources including gold, forest resources, fisheries, fruit, stock, tariffs, a chronicle of Albany events in 1890, regulations for the sale of lands of "The West Australian Land Company", index, and an extensive section of advertisements for a wide range of businesses including one for Mofflin & Co who purchase 'Kangaroo Skins'. Printed at the office of the Albany "Advertiser". The author of this guide, Herbert Pierssené, was a merchant and importer of English continental and Ceylonese goods, an agent for McCulluch Carrying Company, and a bottler of West Australian wines. (He is also advertised in this Albany guide as 'Land and Commission Agent, Albany', with properties to sell.) Pierssene was known for publishing the Western Australia Post Office Directory (between 1893 and 1895), a long-running series printed in Perth and colloquially known as the Wise Directories. "The Albany Guide" is a comprehensive handbook which would have been marketed to and useful for settlers. It is also now a valuable resource for historians. Item #103309
