The Australian Convict Recipe Book
Huonville, Tasmania: Southern Holdings, 1992. Octavo, stiff illustrated wraps, b&w illus, pp 60. Some wear to the front cover, clean, very good condition.
The recipes of Bessie Baldwin, who was transported to Tasmania in 1839 (for striking her baker employer with a rabbit pie and then the pie dish after he refused her a payrise of a penny a week). She continued to resist authority, but became the cook to Sir John and Lady Franklin at Government House, 1842-1849. With photographs, including a panormama of Port Arthur. An interesting collection of nineteenth century recipes, apparently recorded by a visiting governess, with a brief biography of Bessie Baldwin. Item #103202
