London: C. Cooke, 1795-1803. Two volumes, full leather binding restored with new leather back strip with gilt decorative panels and lettering. Engraved b&w frontis and title page each volume, b&w plates, dec tail pieces. N.d., (1795 - 1803): Vol I has the previous owner's signature dated 1801 and the engraved plates dated between1795 and 1800; Vol. II has the signature dated 1804 and the plates dated between 1796 and 1803. Occasional pencil mark in margins, several pages have pencilled notes in the margins. Vol. I has the first nine books of Paradise Lost, and an essay on Milton by Dr Johnson; Vol. II has the last three books of Paradise Lost, and Paradise Regained, Samson Agonistes, L'Allegro, Il Penseroso, Sonnets, Psalms, etc. Restored and rebound by Cottage Bindery of Bath. Very good condition.

An attractive set of Milton. The extra illustrated title page reads: "Milton's Works, [ vol. I/II] Forming Part of Cooke's Pocket Edition of the Original & Complete Works of Select British Poets, or Entertaining Poetical Library, containing the Poetic Productions of the most Esteemed British Bards, Superbly Embellished." Charles Cooke the publisher extolled the virtues of his pocket library series and their illustrations: "Features of portability and ornamental potential were consistent promotional themes of Cooke's editions."
