London: J, De Ville, 1841. Octavo, original cloth boards with blindstamped design both boards and gilt title upper board, b&w frontis plate, b&w illus, pp 184, chipping to upper spine, occasional pencil mark in text, notes and previous owner's signature front endpapers. Two sets of notes loosely inserted. Very good condition.

James De Ville (1777 - 1846) was a British lamp maker, sculptor and plaster-caster, known also as a phrenologist. He worked for a sculptor on casting, and in 1817 he started to collect phrenological specimens and in 1821 began to cast heads from life. His phrenological busts were used in medical lectures. (Phrenology was a pseudoscience that involves the measurement of bumps on the skull to predict mental traits. It was popular in the 19th century.). Item #102873
