Previously restored: original backstrip laid over new cloth, original boards with gilt decoration upper board and presentation also in gilt. Cloth worn and rubbed. Previous owner's inscription front free endpaper. Folding maps repaired with tape to reverse. Some scattered foxing throughout. Traces of water damage final pages. Fair condition of a significant and scarce association copy.
Landmark anthropological study, copiously illustrated. The gilt inscripton on front board appears to be a special presentation copy embossed in gilt: "From 'Warl to Will, June 1st, 1907", most likely from Walter Baldwin Spencer to Alfred William Howitt, where in 1907, he was President of the Adelaide meeting of the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science and where he also delivered his Inaugural Address.
