Thomas Baines was a cartographer, artist and explorer with the scientific team on the North Australia Expedition led by Augustus Gregory from 1855 to 1857. He documented and produced a graphic record of Gregory's journey - 24 paintings in oil and 270 watercolours. In 1858 Baines accompanied David Livingstone along the Zambezi. From 1861 to 1862 he undertook an expedition with James Chapman to explore South West Africa during which extensive use was made of both photography and painting. Item #98731
