Lavishly illustrated and comprehensive study of the life and work of the Dutch-born Indonesian artist Adrianus Wilhelmus "Arie" Smit (1916-2016). Inspired by Gaugin and Cezanne, he was known for his important work over decades of painting in Bali. In 1938 Smit was sent to the Dutch East Indies after having joined the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army. There he worked as the topogographical engraver making maps of the archipelago for the Dutch army and remained in Indonesia until his death in 2016. Item #96925
