William Lawrence's work was considered blasphemous when first issued in 1819 and was soon withdrawn from circulation, hence, very few copies of the first edition exist today. In 1822 the radical political publisher William Benbow issued a pirated edition as is this copy. Charles Darwin owned one of Benbow's unauthorized edition and was obviously impressed with Lawrence's work, citing it five times in The Descent of Man (1871). Item #94691
