The 31st Battalion was raised in Brisbane in 1915; some of the companies were from Victoria and some of the reinforcements were from Western Australia. "The 31st Battalion served on the Western Front as part of the 8th Brigade of the 5th Division. The 31st fought with great valour in the disastrous battles of Fromelles after which it was rebuilt. […] The 31st moved to Belgium and fought in the Third Battle of Ypres. A magnificent attack was carried out at Polygon Wood […] The 31st Battalion moved back to France during the German Spring Offensive, with service on the Somme, followed by the battle of Amiens, Villers-Carbonnel and the Hindenburg Line."
