James Dominick Woods (1826 - 1905) edited and wrote the introductory chapter for 'The Native Tribes of South Australia', published in 1879. The book features chapters on various tribes by people who had worked with them: The Narrinyeri by George Taplin; The Adelaide Tribe by J.P. Wyatt; The Encounter Bay Tribe by C.W. Schurmann; the Dieyerie Tribe by S. Gason; and a chapter on the vocabulary of Woolner District Dialect (Northern Territory) by John Wm Ogilvie Bennett. "The six papers in this edited collection offer a fair reflection of the very incomplete state of ethnographic knowledge in the province of South Australia at the end of the 1870s" (Philip G. Jones of the South Austrlain Museum, foreword). Item #102982
